Dermot Kennedy Biography

Kennedy was born on 13 December 1991 in Rathcoole, County Dublin, Ireland. From an early age, Dermot Kennedy developed an interest in music.

Despite his early musical inclinations, Kennedy initially focused on his studies in classical music at Maynooth University. It was only later that he began to take music seriously, thanks to his parents’ unwavering support and his father’s willingness to drive him into Dublin to perform at open mic nights.

Kennedy’s journey towards stardom began at age 17 when he officially started his career as a busker. Through this experience, he was able to develop his sound and hone his craft, travelling to major cities like Dublin and Boston to perform. It was during this time that he met Glen Hansard, whom he later opened for on tour.

In 2015, Kennedy formed a band called “Shadows and Dust” with three other members during his studies. Although the experience was enjoyable, the band eventually split up, and Kennedy decided to pursue a solo career.

His first festivals were Bonnaroo Music Festival in 2017; Lollapalooza, South by Southwest Festival, and Austin City Limits Music Festival in 2018. He played Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival both weekends in 2019.

In 2018, Kennedy was voted by listeners as NPR Slingshot’s Best New Artist of The Year and appeared on NPR’s Music Tiny Desk Concert in a 14-minute live acoustic session. He also made the BBC’s Sound of 2019 Longlist.

After releasing several singles and EPs, Kennedy released his debut album, “Without Fear,” in late 2019. The album features many of his past works, some dating back eight years before the album’s release. The album was a commercial success and catapulted Kennedy to global fame.

In 2020, Kennedy was nominated for international male solo artist of the year at the BRIT Awards and contributed a cover of the Metallica song “Nothing Else Matters” to the charity tribute album, The Metallica Blacklist.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kennedy continued to create and connect with his fans. He participated in Billboard’s Live At-Home concert, raising money for the non-profit Housing Works. He also organized his own virtual concert, Sound Waves, in support of WHO’s Solidarity Response Fund.

Kennedy’s dedication to giving back extends beyond his music career. In September 2020, he played for the Soccer Aid charity match, joining other celebrities in raising money for UNICEF UK. He helped his team win the match and was named Man of the Match. In March 2022, Kennedy won the RTÉ Choice Music Prize Irish Song of the Year 2021 for his song “Better Days.”
