Ralph Waite was born on June 22, 1928 to his parents Ralph H. Waite and Esther Mitchell Waite in White Plains, New York City, United States of America. He was the oldest of five kids. From 1946 to 1948, Ralph served in the United States Marine Corps. He received his diploma from Pennsylvania’s Bucknell University in the year 1952.

After that, he earned a Master’s degree from Yale University’s Divinity School. He soon was appointed as a minister for Fishers Island’s United Church of Christ. Unfortunately, he left the church because of his disgust with its hypocrisy. Later, he was hired by Harper & Row as the publicity director and associate editor of religious publications.

Ralph Waite tied the knot with Beverly on December 29, 1951. In course of their marriage, the couple was blessed with three daughters; Sharon, Kathleen, and Suzanne. At the young age of nine, his daughter, Sharon passed away from leukemia in 1964. Ralph Waite started drinking heavily as a result of the issue. In addition, his choice to enter the performing industry caused him to divorce Beverly in the year 1966.

On August 27, 1977, Ralph reportedly married the actress Kerry Shear, and on August 31, 1981, they divorced. He later went on to get married to Linda East on December 4, 1982, and they remained together until his passing. In Palm Desert, California, on February 13, 2014, he passed away.
